What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a pain condition that spread out along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Generally, sciatica happens to only one side of the body. What are the types of Sciatica?

Sciatica can be of different types, depending on the period of symptoms and if one or both legs are affected-

Acute sciatica: If the duration of sciatic nerve pain is for 4 to 8-week it is called as acute sciatica and the pain may be self-managed and may not typically require medical treatment.

Chronic sciatica: If the sciatic nerve pain persistent and lasts for more than 8 weeks it is called as chronic sciatica. Generally, it does not subside with self-management. Based on the root cause, chronic sciatica may require nonsurgical or surgical treatment.

Alternating sciatica: If the sciatic nerve pain affects the both legs alternately then it is called as alternating sciatica. This type of sciatica is unusual and may result from degenerative problems in the sacroiliac joint.

Bilateral sciatica: If the sciatica pain occurs in both legs together then it is Bilateral. This type of sciatica is also rare and can occur due to degenerative changes in the vertebrae and/or the disc at several spinal levels or from serious conditions called cauda equina syndrome.
